SILT

Verse I

Pretend you're drowning,

And it's not happening,

Just close your eyes and sink to the bottom.

Cause I'm done fighting, my body's heaving,

And dying for a breath you won't give it.

And I am tired of seeing grey where I always thought I'd see the rainbow.

And I am tired of holding out my hand and catching air.

Chorus

The moon was telling lies but so were you.

And maybe I am lost but so are you.

Let me be your poison.

Verse II

Let lying dogs howl in their sleep,

Let silence slowly turn to madness.

Let unsaid words get spilled like wine just leave cause darling I can't stand this.

And I am tired of seeing grey where I always thought I'd see the rainbow.

And I am tired of holding out my hand and catching air.

Outro

Pretend you're drowning,

And it's not happening,

Just close your eyes and sink to the bottom.

Pretend you're drowning,

And it's not happening,

Just close your eyes and sink to the bottom.

Pretend you're drowning,

And it's not happening,

Just close your eyes and sink to the bottom.

I had had writer's block for like 8 months and then the ideas for this song just started pooling around me. I had recently read the line 'pretend you're drowning' in The Bell Jar and the phrase just stuck with me instantly. There is such peaceful submission in that phrase. It is so loaded with exhaustion and an acceptance of what is happening and it just caught me right between the ribs when I read it and applied it to events occurring in my own life.

This song really stands out to me as Last Apollo: New-Level Unlocked.

I was finally starting to satisfactorily execute all of the ideas and concepts I had been reaching for in earlier Last Apollo songs. This song is proof of sometimes needing a deadline to finish something. I only had the verse written and a crappy alternative chorus (it was really ass I promise) but I knew this song was special and I wanted to perform it at my headliner on May 4th. I banged away trying different ideas for all of April and then landed on this final version the night before our last rehearsal.

I was listening to a lot of Radiohead when I wrote this and thought the song was going to sound like Nude. It does not.
